AutoCAD's history began with a program called Interact CAD, which was developed by Mike Riddle in 1977. Riddle's program was one of the first to digitize drawings. John Walker and other programmers bought Interact CAD and renamed it AutoCAD in 1982.

Walker and other programmers relaunched Interact CAD as AutoCAD in 1982. It was the first CAD program to run on a PC.
AutoCAD variants
Autodesk has created several variants of AutoCAD, including AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD Web, and student versions.
Mobile and cloud-based apps
Autodesk has created mobile and cloud-based apps, including AutoCAD 360, Fusion 360, and A360 Viewer.
Subscription model
Autodesk discontinued the sale of perpetual licenses in 2016 and now offers term-based subscriptions and Autodesk Flex.
